Marvel’s ‘The Defenders’ Shows Leaving Netflix on March 1st
These shows will be departing Netflix on March 1st globally.
Marvels The Defenders series will end on March 1st, 2022 globally, according to Netflix.
A removal notice will appear in select cases for every season of Netflix’ defenders series starting on Feb. 11. When you first watch a show on a profile, the removal notices appear.
As of March 1, Netflix has verified to us that the show will no longer be available on Netflix, and that Disney has regained ownership of the rights.
After March 1st, the following titles from Marvel will no longer be available for purchase.
- “Joseph Jones” is (Seasons 1-3)
- “The Punisher” (Seasons 1-2)
- The Protectors (Limited Series)
- Incredible feats of strength and courage (Seasons 1-3)
- Two seasons of Luke Cage and Iron Fist (Seasons 1-2)
Over the course of four years, more than 160 episodes were released. Season 1 of Daredevil debuted on Netflix in April of that year.
By February of this year, all of Marvels The Defenders Netflix shows had been cancelled, with Jessica Jones season 3 being the last to air in June of this year.
As a result, the revelation that these episodes will no longer be available on Netflix is a major setback for the streaming giant, which has yet to find its footing with its own comic book franchises such as Millarworld .
Why are The Defenders series leaving Netflix?
The news isn’t surprising given Disney’s recent use of Netflix Marvel characters in other products. Kingpin just appeared in Disney’s Hawkeye, and Matthew Murdock (Daredevil) appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Disney CEO Bob Igor stated in 2018 that they were aggressively withdrawing from licensing. On an earnings call, he said:
“We are entirely committed to making the product a long-term success. It has to be the destination for all Disney content, which involves weaning ourselves off other distribution channels,”
In 2017, Netflix lost all first window rights to Disney movies, where it had previously controlled them for a few years.
However, titles from ABC, Freeform, 20th Century Fox, and FX are still available on Netflix in both the US and worldwide.
It’s unclear why these titles will be withdrawn on March 1, 2022.
Below are the Netflix removal notifications for each of the shows:
What’s next for The Defenders on Netflix?
Netflix has acknowledged that the rights to the episodes would revert to Disney, thus it is up to them to decide where they will be available to stream in the near future.
Disney+ is now the home of all things Marvel, so it’s probable that the show will soon be available internationally. Due to Marvel’s current focus on older-skewing programming, we might expect this to be available exclusively on Hulu in the United States, or a joint venture between Hulu and Disney+.
