Best Shrimp Tacos with Creamy Taco Slaw And Shrimp Taco Sauce
To use an old pun, how about TACO-ing about these delicious and nutritious Shrimp Tacos with Creamy Taco Slaw?
BEST Cilantro Lime Sauce with Cabbage Slaw for Healthy Shrimp Tacos. It’s spicy, smoky, and a breeze to make! Grill or cook over an open flame!
What’s that you say? GOOD. As a result, I’ve got a recipe for the tastiest, most flavorful shrimp tacos you’ll ever eat, complete with slaw and salsa.
Putting up with my poor jokes is worth it, too, because this healthy shrimp recipe is worth making for supper tonight.
Why I Love These Tacos Recipe
Every time I make a shrimp recipe, I wonder why I don’t cook with shrimp more often.
Shrimp is not only nutritious but also quick to prepare, making it excellent for weekday meals. So, if you move quickly enough, you can make yourself a Skinny Margarita while the shrimp cooks in less than five minutes.
While fresh shrimp is excellent, I usually buy raw, frozen shrimp. Frozen shrimp is usually cheaper, plus it comes already peeled, so I can get to my dish of Healthy Shrimp Tacos faster.
For easy shrimp tacos, thaw frozen shrimp overnight in the refrigerator, or if you forget (guilty! ), rapidly thaw them.
Place frozen shrimp in a mesh strainer or sieve and soak in cool water for 20 minutes. Avoid using boiling water (the shrimp will start cooking on the outside while the insides are still frozen). Done!
While frozen shrimp isn’t ideal for shrimp cocktail, it’s wonderful for dishes that call for seasonings (like Healthy Shrimp Pad Thai and Shrimp Guacamole Bites) (Garlic Shrimp Pasta, Garlic Shrimp with Quinoa, and Healthy Shrimp Scampi, I heart you all).
Our tacos are seasoned with classic chili powder, smoky chipotle chili powder, and cumin. These tacos are spicy as indicated in the recipe. If you like your shrimp tacos particularly hot, add a bit extra chipotle chili powder or cayenne.
According to my rigorous research, no authentic shrimp taco would be complete without a matching slaw and sauce.
For the taco slaw, I used a “super” blend of prebagged shredded cabbage, broccoli, kale, and Brussels sprouts, which you can see in the recipe video. I appreciated the added vitamin boost from the mix…and not having to grate the cabbage myself. If you only want shrimp tacos with cabbage, that’s fine too.
The taco sauce is a creamy cilantro, lime, and Greek yoghurt blend with jalapeno and garlic for added flavor. It properly balances and cools the heat AND doubles as a fabulous shrimp tacos sauce (assuming you don’t eat it all first).
Come spring (it will come, won’t it?) I plan to use this same shrimp seasoning blend to make grilled tacos. Please do likewise.
How to Heat Shrimp Tacos
- Store. The shrimp is best served the same day but can be refrigerated for 3 days. The slaw can be refrigerated for 2 days and the sauce for 5 days.
- Reheat Because reheated shrimp tends to dry up, I like to use leftovers on salads.
What to Serve with Healthy Shrimp Tacos
- Beans. These tacos would go great with Instant Pot Refried Beans.
- Cornbread. Try these tacos with Mexican Cornbread for a hearty side.
- Margarita. Pour yourself a Skinny Margarita and relax!
I’d love to hear how your tacos turn out, whether you make them outside or inside. Don’t forget to remark! Thanks for writing!
Shrimp Taco Sauce:
With a dash of heat from the hot sauce, we make a simple garlic-lime crema. Add more sriracha hot sauce if you prefer your tacos spicier. Add less spicy sauce if you prefer a milder flavour.
To make it feel more like dining out, serve this out of a squeeze bottle rather than a spoon or zip bag.
